Project overview
Brussels' Largest Citizen Energy Community
A pioneering example of participatory engagement and energy inclusion at the heart of the European capital
Tour & Taxis.energy represents much more than a simple renewable energy community: it's a true social innovation laboratory where citizen engagement and active resident participation are transforming Brussels' energy landscape. Launched in January 2022, this revolutionary initiative has become the largest active energy community in Brussels.
An Unprecedented Participatory Approach
What distinguishes Tour & Taxis.energy is its resolutely participatory approach. Neighborhood residents have been placed at the center of concerns, with an economic model that prioritizes accessibility and social equity. Renewable energy is made primarily accessible to subsidized housing, creating a virtuous circle where the energy transition benefits the most vulnerable populations first.
Infrastructure and Impact
Key figures: •
3,000 kWp
- installed on 10,000 solar panels
3,000 MWh/year
- of renewable energy production
50+ active participants
- from residential buildings
70% optimized collective self-consumption •
17% average savings
- on participants' bills
€47,000 annual savings
- redistributed to the community
1.98 tons of CO₂ avoided each year
A Revolutionary Inclusion Model
The community operates according to a unique participatory inclusion principle: 50% of production directly powers the Maritime Station (offices, shops, services), while the other half is equitably redistributed to Park Lane residents and the neighborhood via an intelligent energy sharing system.
Democratic Governance
Structured around the
Share.energy ASBL association, the community guarantees democratic governance where each member-participant has a voice. This structure ensures that economic benefits remain at the service of the community.
Partnership of Excellence
- An exemplary collaborative ecosystem brings together:
Nextensa
- Initiating real estate developer
Sibelga
- Network manager facilitator
Brugel
- Regional regulator guaranteeing the legal framework
WeSmart: Technology operator and platform manager
Innovation and Research
The project serves as an experimentation ground for several European initiatives (BlueBird, MOnergiZE, MELISSA) that study the optimization of citizen engagement and the development of energy flexibility solutions.
Future Vision
Tour & Taxis.energy paves the way toward a new energy model where citizens become actors in their own energy transition, demonstrating that it's possible to reconcile economic efficiency, social justice, and environmental ambition.
